Intelligent Viewership and the Prime Time Soap Opera Format

Is there such a thing as 'Intelligent Viewership' on Philippine TV?Apparently not.

I was never a big fan of the soap opera format wherein the actors and makers of the show slave almost daily to create a daily cliffhanger TV show which does not have a solid, central theme. Usually it's just a glorified Cinderella story, a fantasized Cinderella story, or an action Cinderella story. If not, it's revenge, revenge, revenge. I can name eight soap operas with revenge as the central storyline. Hell! There's even a soap opera called 'Ganti'! Who am I kidding?

The point of the above paragraph is, the makers of the show slave for days over a show which do not offer any intelligent benefits. The soaps are what is called in the industry as 'One-shots': One time fad, tommorw easily forgotten.

Commercial garbage such as 'Encantadia', Kampanerang Kuba', 'Darna', and all the other fantasy-themed soap opera were created solely to reap the benefits brought about by the adverts. So, who cares for uplifting the viewing experience of the everyday Filipino? NO-ONE! as long as the dough keeps rolling in, who cares about what the kids watch on TV.

SO maybe it's also semi-justifiable to say that Philippine TV is a big contributor to the 'idiot factor' of kids nowadays.

holy.. i also had an inkling on doing a story (visual- comic) on something fantasy, pre-spanish of course. nothing commercial...

then the computer crashed, and with it, all the links of websites and info i had meticuously researched and saved in the computer. the only thing i remembered was i had touched on the topics of arnis and kali.

anyway, if ever you do publish that book, let me know. it looks interesting, and though its fiction, it will give a view on the beliefs and culture of our ancestors. good luck! :)

pero... encantadia, commercial garbage? :(

thank you for the visit!

if you had an idea, go and do it! sayang naman. maybe you've got the magical talents to weave a fantastic story. sayang, ituloy mo lang.

yung sakin naman, the two-logy (two books lang eh!) is an inspirational combination of tolkien, greek mythology, star wars, and the spaghetti westerns of sergio leone (particularly 'the good, the bad, the ugly') squeezed in with philippine history and mythology. Imagine if you put in all of these elements into a book, and you'll get the idea. siguro if you're interested i could send you a sample chapter.

encantadia: isn't it obvious? fantaserye is the flavour of the season. the shallow mind of ABS started it, and since everybody saw the moneygrubbing potential, they went and did it. someone said that encantadia was very pinoy because of the fairies, pero i disagree. the very words they use like 'encantadia', 'sangre', and all the other terms are SPANISH-LATIN words!

like i said, flavour of the season. madaling makakalimutan ang mga programang ito.

tnx for the encouragement :) i'll still see if i'm up to it. not only because the 'lost archives' has rendered me in a 'forget it' mode. so, i need to rebuild my patience. research alone is time consuming.

yet time is also something of a luxury i can't afford right now. i don't go online very often lately, and not that i'm too busy, but i need to prioritize stuff. bah. long story.

the sample chapter is a nice offer though, tnx. pero pag nabuo mo na lang, tapos published na, tell me abt it. its kinda hard to be left hanging, naku, ayoko nung ganun, it'll drive me insane -- cliffhangers, unresolved stuff, the works. might fall in love pa with the characters. aaaa! :)

short comment on encantadia on kapuso.proactive.
